Note: If your answer is (x + 5)(x - 2) enter it in the answer block as (x+5)*(x-2), using the asterisk.

Factor the following equation. (Note that the product of the constant terms is equal to the constant
in the trinomial and the sum of the constant terms is equal to the coefficient of the middle term.)

Solution: The constant term is -10. -10 can be factored into four possible pairs.
The pairs are (1,-10), (10,-1), (5,-2), and (-2,5).
The pair that gives a sum of +3 is (5,-2). Using this pair gives

Try finding this solution by entering x^2+3*x-10 into the Graphing Calculator in the Function f(x) = box .
Click on the Plot Graph button.
The curve will cross the x-axis at points x = 2 and x = -5 (This is a good check for your answer)
