Write the equation for the line shown in the figure below.
Solution: The general equation for a straight line can be written as y = mx + b
where m is the slope of the line and b is the y-intercept of the line.
For the line shown, the line crosses the y-axis at x = 0 and y = 1.5. Thus, b = 1.5
Also for the line shown, for x = 1, y = 3.5. Thus as x goes from 0 to 1, y goes from 1.5 to 3.5
so the slope m of the line can be found as
Now you can write the equation of the line y = mx + b as
y = 2x + 1.5
You can check this solution using the graphing calculator by entering 2*x+1.5 in the Function f(x)=box.
Then click on the Plot Graph button.
The answer will graph in the grapher. Compare it with the figure given above.
Example:
For a point located 2.5 units to the right of the origin and 1.3 units down
from the origin, the ordered pair (x,y) = (2.5 , -1.3).
