Problem 1

Select a different problem

Solve the following:

Given:
The number of nuts and bolts (N + B) in the bin is
The difference of the number of nuts and bolts (N - B) is
How many nuts (N) and bolts (B) are in the bin?

N (nuts) =

B (bolts) =

Example:

The sum of two numbers is 48. The difference
of the same two numbers is 24. What are the
the two numbers?

This can be written in shorthand form as

N1 + N2 = 48 and
N1 - N2 = 24 and

Adding the two equations gives 2N1 = 72.

So N1 = 36.

Subtracting the two equations gives 2N2 = 24.

So N2 = 12.
